Of the Community

Forty years ago, large institutions warehousing thousands of people were common. Today, most people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are living with their families or in homes and apartments in their communities. But are they active members of their communities? Most of the large, segregated buildings no longer provide services and supports to people with IDD, but an institutional mindset prevails in many of our community services. Supporting people with IDD to live good lives requires respect, imagination, flexibility, higher expectations, and a commitment to providing truly individualized person centered supports. Of the Community explores community living today.
